NLP And Fire Walk

Friday, April 30th, 2010

The most controversial psychotherapy concepts are the NLP. NLP stands for Neuro Linguistic Program, it was originally founded in the 1970s as a form of psychological therapy and counseling. In the past, it had a little support from the scientific community, but now many people believe in NLP, and wish to become trained NLP practitioners. It is now a lucrative industry, with many self-help workshops, seminars, audio tapes, and books being introduced every month for all types of issues.

This approach has been discovered and developed in the 1970s to psychotherapy and organizational change can be better understood by trying to look at the meaning of each word that makes it up. ‘Neuro’ refers to the nerves or the nervous system while the word ‘linguistic’ refers to language. ‘Programming’ refers to designing, scheduling, or planning. So, NLP is how our brain is “programmed” for us to behave in a particular way because of our subjective experiences.

As an NLP master practitioner I have attended a lot of courses and seminars and events. Well, during Tony’s UPW, the centerpiece of the first day is the Fire walk. Tony uses this as a metaphor for demonstrating that it is possible for people to do things that seem impossible to them, he uses the fire walk as a technique for turning fear into power.

One thing that surprises many people is that although NLP is quite expenses to learn, the NLP techniques are actually free to do once you know how. NLP is all done in the mind and we all have one to use whenever we want.

All you need to do is
1. Look for some areas in your life where you would normally hesitate
2. Go to commercial premises such as a shop, restaurant, service station etc, and make an absurd request whilst keeping a straight face.
3. Repeat twice or more in the space of the week.
4. Look forward to situations in which you have previously hesitated with a new found power.

This works because the central nervous system protects us from dangerous situations. We have been previously conditioned against making mistakes and that our mistakes are dangerous. Yet making mistakes is an incredibly important part of learning, growing and exploring.

Because many claim that NLP help people change by teaching them to program their brains, it is quickly being adapted and applied even by ordinary people in their everyday lives. Many self-help “experts” have likewise used it and incorporated it into their lives.

Although many of the concepts of the NLP that one would see in many reading materials are confusing and complicated, there are also many simplistic discussions and techniques available. The NLP has been widely used to reduce trauma (fast phobia cure), lose bad habits, achieve excellence, improve communication (conversational hypnosis techniques), succeed in business, improve relationships, and improve health.

With a little practice and a little patience, you too can rid yourself of the above issues and better your life in wonderful ways. I wish you the best of luck.
